AUDITIONS - She Stoops To Conquer

Posted on Aug 08, 2016 by Oliver Goldsmith

Auditions for this timeless comedy to be directed by Malcolm Galea will be held on Sunday 18th September at 10am at the MADC Clubrooms. The main plot sees the lovely Kate Hardcastle pretend to be a barmaid in order to woo young Charles Marlow who is cripplingly shy around gentlewomen but quite the opposite around common wenches. This fantastic piece was last staged at the Manoel in February 1986 when Paul Xuereb directed it for the MADC starring Beatrice Dennis as Mrs Hardcasle, and the younger roles being played by Marylu Coppini, Edward Mercieca and Alan Montanaro.

Here’s a description of the character along with the playing age.

Kate Hardcastle (20s): a wonderfully witty and radiant young lady. She’s obedient to her father but quite capable of bending the rules to get her way.

Charles Marlow (20s): a well-educated young man who is incredibly sheepish around ladies but more than makes up for it around women of lower standing.

Tony Lumpkin (20s): The mischievous, fun-loving son of Mrs Hardcastle and Kate’s stepbrother. Fond of beer and a good joke, Tony’s trick on Charles sets up the play’s main plot.

Mr Hardcastle (50-65): a good old-fashioned country gentleman who would like to introduce his daughter to his old friend’s scholarly son. He is a strong adherer to old-fashioned manners and politeness.

Mrs Hardcastle (50-65): Tony’s doting over-protective mother, she is almost the exact opposite of her husband and possibly one of the most fun characters in English theatre.

George Hastings (20s): Charles’s friend and travelling companion, George is supportive and in love with Constance.

Constance Neville (20s): Mrs Hardcastle’s niece and unwillingly engaged to her cousin Tony Lumpkin, Constance is also the heiress to a large fortune.

Sir Charles Marlow (50-65): Mr Hardcastle’s old friend, he is also the father of the younger Charles Marlow.

Additionally, there are also various servants, drinking companions, and other minor characters of various ages that would also need to be played by an awesome group of actors.
