Synopsis:
Bassanio, an aristocratic but poor young man of Venice has fallen in love with Portia, a beautiful young lady of Belmont. Bassanio needs money to woo the lady. He asks his friend Antonio, the merchant of Venice, for a loan. Antonio's money is tied-up in business ventures so borrows money from a Jewish moneylender named Shylock. Antonio signs a bond agreeing to give Shylock a pound of his flesh if the money is not repaid on a certain date. Will Bassanio win Portia’s heart? Will Antonio repay the borrowed money on time?
THE MERCHANT OF VENICE is Shakespeare at his boldest, most dangerous and most entertaining - funny and romantic, dark and subversive, fantastical and yet as real as flesh and blood can be. Its sublime poetry awash with the ocean and the imaginative allure of Venice, Merchant is a courtroom thriller offering an eternally modern perspective on every culture's addiction to risk and money, every human being's hunger for love and friendship, and every community's need to understand the difference between justice and mercy.
