Set around and in a large pool in the beautiful San Anton Gardens, The Tempest,
Shakespeare’s last play, features characters from two worlds, a desolate island and the world
at large. In keeping with the still prevalent gender inequalities, director Stephen Oliver
(Amadeus, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, The Memory of Water, Death and the Maiden,
Festen) will cast those on the island; Prospera, her daughter, Ariel and Caliban, Prospera’s
slaves as female and the world outside all male. It was men that exiled Prospera and her
daughter to their fate.
